On 23 August 1989, fifty years after the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact which prepared and initiated World War II, about two million residents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined hands and formed a
600-kilometre-long human chain connecting Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius for 15 minutes. The entire world witnessed that the independence, lost due to the criminal pact, was still very much alive in the minds of the three Baltic nations. Since the restoration of their statehood in 1991, the Baltic nations have stood ready to defend their independence and have remained determined to protect their freedom also in the future.
